Q & A

Below are some recent questions we've received regarding Beaphar Anti-Parasite Spot On, including answers from our team.

How long to recover

Sunny

Our Syrian hamster had some small scabbed patches on his body we suspected mites and treated with this product, 5 days ago. How long before seeing an improvement to the scabbed areas? He hasn't developed any further patches and the scabs have not appeared to worsen, however are still present. He isn't scratching at the moment.
He is 18 months old and the scabbed areas are small area above eye near his ear on both sides and a few on his side and one on his tummy. All the patches are relatively small. He is eating, drinking and exercising as normal.

If the problem is related to a parasite then multiple treatments may be required. The datasheet states that 'if necessary, the treatment can be repeated after 4 weeks' so this may be needed.
The only way to be certain a parasite infestation is cleared is by taking samples from the skin, your vet will be able to do this for you.

If treatment is successful at clearing the issue then it can take 7 to 14 days for the skin to heal post resolution.

There are other causes to the signs you describe, such as ringworm. If the problem persists or worsens then it is advised to see your vet.

Does age and suitability for Russian dwarf hamster

Clare

Is this suitable for my Russian dwarf she is 50g. If so would you recommend reduced dose or full amount.

  • VioVet Staff

Beaphar Anti Parasite spot on is only suitable for hamsters weighing over 50g, the vast majority of dwarf hamsters are below that weight.
We recommend using the Xeno 50 pipettes instead, this are suitable for Russian Dwarf Hamsters weighing 10g or more.

Guinea Pig RIngworm

Hannah

Will this treat ringworm on a Guinea Pig?

  • VioVet Staff

Ringworm is actually a fungus and so unfortunately this will not treat it. You will need prescription medication from your vet to treat this condition, it is advised to contact them for this.

Does this prevent myxomatosis

Flea treatment

Does this product prevent myxomatosis
If not can you recommend a flea treatment that does

  • VioVet Staff

This is an anti-parasite spot on whilst myxomatosis is a virus. This means it protects against parasites such as mites, it will not protect against myxomatosis. The only way to do this is by vaccination and I recommend discussing this further with your vet.

Bald patches

Bun Bun

Can you use this product to clear the flaky if there is a bald patch?

  • VioVet Staff

This medication treats parasites and so will only help flakey skin if parasitic skin disease is the cause. It is best to see your vet to have the issue diagnosed if you are unsure.

E cunniculi

Diane

Will this help prevent E Cunnuculi in rabbits

  • VioVet Staff

This spot on contains ivermectin which is not effective against E.Cuniculi. Preventing E.Cuniculi is very difficult, you can use Panacur for rabbits as this contains fenbendazole which will treat the issue. However it will only prevent the condition when being actively dosed. This means you would need to dose daily for your rabbits entire life. There are no guaranteed prevention protocols for E.Cuniculi in rabbits that involve a reasonable dose regime. Some vets will advise a 9 day course of Panacur every 1 to 3 months as a compromise.

How many times a week?

Estera

I just put on the first dose, when do i put the 2 and the 3 dose?

  • VioVet Staff

The datasheet for this medication advises that 'If necessary, the treatment can be repeated after 4 weeks.'. I recommend repeating after this time if you are concerned parasites are still present.

Can this be used on a nursing ferret?

Mo

My ferret has a litter of 2 week old kits. They have suddenly all got fleas. Can I treat the mother? If I do will the kits get some protection? At what age could the kits be treated? Thanks.

  • VioVet Staff

The University of
Edinburgh exotics referral service provided some anecdotal information:"We cannot advise treatment with Xeno or other ivermectin drugs [This
includes the Beaphar spot on] in pregnant or lactating females as there
have been no extensive studies carried out to confirm safety. However,
from personal experience, on any occasions it has been used, no adverse
effects have been noted in the offspring or dam. Clinician discretion
and judgement should be used for each case."

If treatment is
required, as part of routine parasite control, during pregnancy or
lactation then it would be advisable to delay medication until
post-weaning. Although, if the welfare of the dam was compromised due
to excessive parasite burden, then treatment would be warranted.

I
recommend discussing this with your local vet as they can advise on
whether treatment is 100% necessary or not. Otherwise it is best to wait
until the kits have been weaned.

Static lice

Amanda

Hello, i have two girl guinea pigs and noticed one has what i believe is static lice. Does this treat this? I brought them in November/December 2020 and were told they were about 10 weeks old. How many pipettes would i need per guinea pig.

  • VioVet Staff

Yes the Anti-Parasite Spot On for rabbits, guinea pigs, ferrets and rats is licensed to treat guinea pigs for lice. You should dose as per the guidelines which are as follows:

Bodyweight Dosage Guideline
300–750g 1 x 150μg pipettes
750–1,500 2 x 150μg pipettes
>1,500g 3 x 150μg pipettes

How long do you need to give them this

Mea

How long do you need to give them this for the itching to go away. Does it make it go away forever.

  • VioVet Staff

If the itching is related to parasites then it should resolve once these are eliminated by the product. The datasheet states that 'if necessary, the treatment can be repeated after 4 weeks' so repeat treatment may be required. If you are unsure if the itching is caused by parasites then I recommend contacting your vet to have the issue diagnosed.
