I don't like the new recipe for this product, neither does my daughter. We give it to both our budgies and it doesn't last as long as it used to. There's a lot of the bits they don't like and they throw them out or eat round about them. We're having to give them an extra scoop each day.

Budgie diet

Laura

Hi there, I just wanted to ask what to do about my budgies diet. I've been trying for a while to convert my budgie to Harrisons pellet but even though he's very young he always spits it out and seems to dislike the taste and texture of it, I've tried mixing it with seed, moistening it and even making pellet and millet balls but he even spits out the seed that has moistened pellet on it. He does have a varied diet of fruit, vegetables and millet seed but I'm quite keen for him not to be on purely seed due to the high fat content. Would this product be a good substitute or do you suggest using a different kind of pellet as a life long diet? Thank you for your help.

Different birds can have different individual preferences just like we can. Your budgie may well take to a different brand of complete diet (eg Harrison's High Potency Fine) or he might well just much prefer seed. I suspect that he will be eating some of the food and is just playing about with it and being a bit wasteful. If you stopped the seed, he would probably eat the complete diet much better. It is up to you how to go from here. If he does eat green food and vegetables then it is in fact OK for the rest of his diet to be seed.(Fruit is less good because of the sugars it contains. Salad type items and especially green leafy stuff is best to give.)
