Does this product treat ear mites

rianna hollis

My dog has got an irritated ear due to ear mites. Will this treat it?

  • VioVet Staff

The description of this product states:
Beaphar Ear Drops are kind to ears but destroy ear mites, soften and loosen ear wax and they can ease irritation
It will aim to destroy ear mites by suffocating them as it does not contain any mite specific medications. Only prescription products are licensed to kill mites and it is worth contacting your vet if you think this is the cause.

I recommend reading our blog 'Itchy ears' for more information on over the counter options for ear issues.

Smelly waxy ear

Tina

After fixing my dogs ear with the drops how often should I use them to stop the problem recurring?

  • VioVet Staff

Ideally you should keep an eye on things and use the minimum amount needed to keep the ears looking OK. Most people would start off with one treatment per week and see how it goes from there.

Excessive ear flapping

Shirley Fleider

My 2 dachshunds shake there heads excessively ., ears flap .. Is this something to worry about

  • VioVet Staff

Head shaking in dogs is often a sign of "itchy" ears. This can be caused by all sorts of things, but allergies and infections of various types are common causes. These drops are often helpful at soothing the ears and can help with mild infections. It is acceptable to try them and see how things go as long as your dogs are not in distress with their ears. If things are too bad, then it is much better to go to your vet first and have them checked professionally.

Bad ears

Gillian Hooper

  • VioVet customer since 2014
  • From: Devon, United Kingdom

Can my dog build up a resistance to these ear drops please?
He seems to suffer with itchy skin and ears but give a 10ml omega 3 &6 oil with food once a day. Are the Otodex drops safer if used long term and what and how is best to clean the ear with please?
Thank you.

Miss Gillian Hooper.

  • VioVet Staff

Any type of ear treatment tends to become less effective if it is used for a long time. The underlying itchiness is often due to an allergy and this could be investigated perhaps. Simply treating symptoms is much less effective than finding and eliminating the underlying cause.

As for cleaning the ears, any of the ear cleaners on the website (such as CleanAural) should be safe and effective. They come with full instructions on how to use them. Waxy or mucky ears should be cleaned as often as required to keep them clean. Ear cleaners should remain effective long-term.

Query; BEAPHAR EAR DROPS for Dogs

Michelle Leddie

  • VioVet customer since 2010
  • From: Lincolnshire, United Kingdom

Do you do a homeopathic version of the BEAPHAR EAR DROPS for Dogs??

I have a large, 5 year old staffy/alsation cross bitch, she has quite a bad Ear Mite infestation, very red and sore looking, Is the aforementioned Ear product strong enough for this?? Also, just wondered if u did a Homeopathic version?

  • VioVet Staff

We do not do a homeopathic version of ear treatment for conditions like this. Part of the problem is physical accumulation of debris and this needs a physical treatment. A soothing liquid to help loosen waxy debris in the ear and suppress the growth of any potential pathogens is usually important. The Beaphar ear drops can help with this. It may or may not be adequate, depending on other factors involved with your dog's particular problem. Allergic factors are often involved and it can be quite complicated. Ideally you should see your vet if it does not clear up quickly or if your dog is in any distress.
