Alabama Rot

Many dog owners are looking for a bacterial barrier shampoo to prevent their dogs contracting AR. Can horse products that are used for mud fever ( mud is thought to be a cause for AR) be safety used on dogs.

  • Customer Service/Meds Advisor

Hi there,

Thank you for your query.

We would not advise using equine products on companion animals as no safety testing has been done. Unfortunately with Alabama Rot, there is little we actually know about the disease and there are no proven cures, preventions or treatments.

There are mild bacterial shampoos and washes which can be used to wash your dog after walking in high risk woodland and wet areas, and some great products to try are Aqueos, DermAlly and Wahl Tea Tree shampoo.

There is a good article on Alabama Rot on our Berriewood site which you may find interesting:

I hope this helps.
