Description

Alizin is used a treatment of canine misalliance, for the termination of pregnancy in bitches up to 45 days from mating

Alizin contains 30mg/ml aglepristone, a synthetic progesterone antagonist, effective on uterine progesterone receptors, with a relative binding affinity three times stronger than endogenous progesterone – thus providing effective competitive antagonism of progesterone and blocking the hormone responsible for implantation and pregnancy maintenance.

It offers high efficacy over a flexibile treatment period from 0-45 days post-mating. It is given by subcutaneous injection.

What if I give this medication to my dog after the 45 days?

  • VioVet Staff

This is an off license use of the medication and so unfortunately we cannot advise on it. Your prescribing vet will be able to though, it is strongly recommended you contact them for more information on this.

Risk of infection

Chloe

hello, im just curious how effective alizin is and if there is any risk of infection? ive been told by many vets that most abortion options for dogs causes pyometra. Im looking for the safest method for my girl that will allow for long term breeding and very little to no side effects.

  • VioVet Staff

I recommend reading the product side effects as per the datasheet for this information. The part of this relevant to your question is pasted below:

In bitches treated after 20 days of gestation, abortion is
accompanied by the physiological signs of parturition: fetal expulsion,
vaginal discharge, reduced appetite, restlessness and mammary
congestion. In field trials, 3.4 % of dogs suffered from uterine
infections. After induced abortion with the veterinary medicinal
product, an early return to oestrus is frequently observed (oestrus
oestrus interval shortened by 1 to 3 months).

Hi, how many times is it safe for the bitch to have a pregnancy terminated with Alizin? Unfortunately this is the third time in 15 months that she has been caught by my male. You don't need to tell me I should be more cautious, he's mustard at it, took him all of a couple of minutes alone with her this time. Thank you.

  • VioVet Staff

There are no specifics in the datasheet of the product regarding repeat use. The datasheet does state 'Possible long-term effects of treatment have not been studied' which means that long term use of the drug and it's effects are unknown unfortunately. I advise following your vet's advice on whether long term use is safe or not.

Can i do this injection myself

Caitlin

My bitch is 7 and a male got to her and mated with her before he was booked in for his snip. The vets want me to pay £140 for them to do this.

I cant guarantee she is pregnant but of course id rather give this to ensure she isnt either way.
But is it something i am able to do myself? Is there any side effects ?

  • VioVet Staff

This is a prescription only medication that must be injected safely and effectively. Your vet can write a prescription for you for this product so that you can order it from us and administer it at home, but only if they feel it will be given safely by you. I recommend discussing this with your vet. They may decide it is safest to administer in clinic and choose not to write a prescription for you.

Can I mate my bitch on her next season after Alizin?

VioVet Visitor

Can I mate my bitch on her next season after Alizin or do I have to wait?

  • VioVet Staff

Alizin will not affect your dogs future fertility as there is no residual action. However most people would let their dogs have one season before another mating since abortion due to Alizin can be stressful for the dog- this allows her time to get back to normal.

Does my 9month old bitch need injectionmy

donna

My 9month old bitch mated on her 6 day on season could she get pregnant

  • VioVet Staff

If you could be certain it is just the 6th day then pregnancy is unlikely. However the start of a season can be very slight and difficult to notice sometimes. If the bitch allowed genuine mating to occur then pregnancy is certainly possible. If the male was just interested but failed to get anywhere then you do not need to worry. If in doubt, it is safe and advisable to have the Alizin injection to prevent the chances of an unwanted pregnancy..

Hi, does this drug work after recommended dosage so the bitch is protected if mismatch again in short time? Next day after injection?

  • VioVet Staff

This treatment is best given after the end of the season (oestrous) and so the bitch will not be receptive to mating at that time anyway. If the treatment is given sooner than this, it should still be effective as the drug persists in the body for a few days and is not excreted immediately. The normal treatment is 2 injections, 24 hours apart anyway.
