Acclaim household flea spray is used to eradicate or prevent flea infestations in the home. One 400ml can is enough to treat 140 square metres and will kill fleas for 6 months, but more importantly it will prevent them breeding for 12 months.
Fleas become a pest when they breed in nooks and crannies around your home, building up a large population, most of which is not on your pets at any one time, so cannot be treated by products applied to them. Treating your house for fleas makes more sense than treating your animals sometimes, because there can be as many as 100 developing fleas in the environment for every 1 flea on your pet!
A Guide to using Acclaim®
Hints and Tips
Eggs are laid by a flea on your pet, then they drop off onto the floor or bedding, to develop later into fleas. Sometimes a huge population will build up, completely out of site. They can then develop in waves and infest any pets in the house. Even houses with no carpets are at risk - fleas can easily develop in the gaps between floor boards, skirting boards etc. Every little crevice at floor level in your house needs to be sprayed to prevent fleas from becoming a nuisance. Treatment at the start of the warm weather, before fleas have taken hold, is recommended.
The fleas you see on your pet are adult fleas which are only 5% of the flea population, the other 95% are made up by the other 3 life stages, which are eggs, larvae and pupa which live in commonly visit area's by your pet, i.e. carpets, bedding, rugs etc.
Vet-Kem Acclaim Household Flea Spray is one of the most effective household flea sprays available.
When treating the house care should be taken to treat all of carpets and rugs, skirting boards and tiles, paying particular attention to any cracks, crevices and areas hidden areas by such things like furniture. After spraying it is recommended that the room is closed up for half an hour and then ventilated for a further half hour.
Vet-Kem Acclaim Household Flea Spray will interrupt the life cycle by killing the eggs and larvae of the flea but you may see residual adult fleas appearing due to the chemicals being unable to kill off the pupa stage.
An application of Vet-Kem Acclaim Household Flea Spray will be active in your home for up to 1 year. One canister is sufficient to cover 140sqm.
Vet-Kem Household Flea Spray also eliminates ants, cockroaches, ticks, earwigs, silverfish, other bristle tails, centipedes, spiders and beetles.
Permethrin (rapidly kills adult fleas),
In order to be effective it will be necessary to treat any animals in the household for fleas and as fleas act as an intermediary host to tapeworm and effective worming treatment is also recommended.

Below are some recent questions we've received regarding Acclaim Household Flea Treatment, including answers from our team.
We are treating our indoor rabbit for fleas but would also like to treat our front room where we keep her! Will this product be ok if we keep her in another room for few hours?
Pets and children may return as soon as surfaces are dry to the touch, usually 10-20 mins.
I hope this helps.
Wondering if this spray can also be used for bed bugs?
Acclaim contains permethrin, the chemical commonly used to kill bed bugs but the instructions on the packaging are for flea control, so you'd need to seek advice on how to use the product for bed bugs eg. how to prepare the room to be treated, whether you need to treat more than just the affected room etc.
It can be used on soft furnishings such as curtains, carpets and mattresses.
Due to permethrin being the active ingredient which is effective against a wide range of insects, Accalim is also effective against ants, cockroaches, ticks, earwigs, silverfish, other bristle tails, centipedes, spiders and beetles.
Flea spray and children
I've sprayed my house with Acclaim ive spayed the lounge rug and around the edges of the laminate flooring can I spray all the laminate and once it's settled are my children ok to play on the floor and rug I last sprayed the rug on wed and my niece has been playing on the rug today. Also I still found a flea on me why hasn't it worked x
Fleas are only killed if they come into contact with the treated areas. Ideally you need to spary the whole area, or some will certainly survive. It is in fact a slow process to get rid of fleas. Once a population has established somewhere, then they take a whie to gradually be eradicated. If yuo spray the house periodically and before feas have got going, then they will not be seen at all. Playing catch-up after they have got a hold is always a slightly slow process. It is a good idea to spray all of the laminated floor and everywhere else. Once it has settled out of the air and dried on the surfaces, it is perfectly safe for children.
Is it safe for someone with a dog to use the product regularly. My elderly dad is anxious about a recent flea infestation and is using Acclaim almost daily at the moment in areas where the dog has been and I'm a little worried in case this is in any way not a healthy thing for him or the dog too. I am also a little worried in case he is using it without airing a room afterwards (e.g. before going to bed for the night). Many thanks for your kind advice.
This is not the recommended way of doing things at all, and certainly the room should be aired before it is occupied. However if your dad is doing all this from just one can, then the total amount of product he has available is limited and so there is little chance of it being a problem. If he is buying more cans and using those up, that would be a much greater concern. A quick squirt from the same can, done repeatedly is not going to be a problem, though it might not achieve much.
By far the most effective thing to do is treat all of the home as directed on the can and then to use a good spot-on product (eg Advantage) on any dogs and cats in the house. This should also be used just as recommended on the label (once monthly with most products). Flea problems can be prevented very easily by doing this. It is always a slower process to get rid of an infestation once it has built up to high levels, but it is still effective.
When I search for scabies treatments this came up, will this kill mites in the carpets?
This product is active to some extent against house dust mites, which I presume is why it showed up in the search. If this is what you want to achieve, it will help, but it will not eradicate them all.
Regarding Scabies mites, they do not live off the body for any significant time and burrow into the skin of an affected individual. I do not think that Acclaim will be of much help in treating Scabies. You need a persistent acaricide used on the animal itself, so that newly developing mites are killed as well. Your vet can prescribe something for this. The house will not be a reservoir for re-infestaition with Scabies mites if the treatment on the animal is adequate.
My rabbit has walking dandruff can this be used to treat its hutch?
As long as the rabbit is kept elsewhere while you use the spray and for a couple of hours afterwards, this should be a good product to help. You should apply something to the rabbit as well of course. An ivermectin spot-on such as Xeno 450 is often very good, or your vet may give an injection of the same drug. (Do not do both at the same time, that would be an over-dose!)
How safe is it to use with my asthmatic son in the house?
It is not advisable to actually spray this aerosol when you son is present. However once the spray has settled, it leaves an insecticide coating on the floors and other surfaces but is not present in the air. As long as your son is kept away for a few hours so that all the droplets can settle, there should not be any problem. However you must check with your doctor if you are at all unsure, as we are not in a position to be able to comment on his particular medical condition.
I'd like to know if this product (Acclaim Spray) is safe for pregnant women to use in their home and bedroom?
I contacted Ceva (the manufacturer) with your query and this was their response:
"There is nothing stated on the safety data sheet for Acclaim Household Flea Spray ââthat states it cannot be used by pregnant women and so is absolutely fine to use."
Hope that helps.
Is this safe to use around a pregnant dog?
This is regarded as a very safe product. I would not recommend actually spraying it when your pregnant dog is present and inhaling air with the freshly sprayed aerosol droplets present. After a couple of hours or so, all the droplets should have fallen to the ground or other surfaces and provide a safe but effective coating there. This should not be a problem for your pregnant dog at all and is safer than having fleas around with young puppys.
Whenever I search for tick killer for the home, this comes up ... will this also kill/prevent ticks in the home?
Yes this product does kill ticks too.
