Senior Cat Food

As cats grow older, their nutritional requirements begin to change. In general, a cat enters his or her senior years at around the age of eight. At this stage, it could well be time to consider a specialised senior cat food.

As cats begin to enter later life, they tend to become slightly less active and, as such, have a slower metabolism. While all cats need a regular intake of meat based protein whatever their age, senior cats require fewer calories and less fat. Senior cat food needs to provide concentrated, high quality proteins – low quality cat foods that use animal by-products should certainly be avoided.

Many senior cat food brands contain fewer calories than regular cat food. As with senior dog food, a lower calorie count helps your cat to maintain a healthy weight as his or her activity level drops. While dry dog foods can serve some canines well in later life, senior cats will benefit from smaller and softer bits of food. Easy to digest proteins and carbohydrates will help with your cat’s digestion while also making chewing much easier.

Vitamins and minerals are also vital to your cat’s all-round health. With the correct dietary balance, these minerals will help keep ageing joints in good order while proteins and vitamins will aid your cat’s immune system. In order to obtain a good dietary balance for your cat, it is best to consult your local doctor before selecting the ideal cat food online.

Supplements to both senior cat food and senior dog food brands may sometimes be recommended by your vet. Various diseases common in older cats can require such dietary supplements in order to maintain certain nutritional levels. Our extensive senior dog food and cat food range will help you find that perfect balance for your pet’s diet, and our dietary supplements will fulfil any recommendations made by your local vet.
