Aug 2012

Welcome to the Cat Food Giveaway Page!

As part of our "Give a Little Back" program we  invited 7 cat charities (or causes) to receive free cat food and treats worth over £485.
During the competition we realised it was VioVet's 6th birthday so a further £100 of cat food was added to celebrate.
By the time we ended sending out the cat food the value would have totaled over £600.

Our  Facebook friends were asked to read about each of the charities/rescues and cast their vote.

All those cat charities who took part received free cat food.  VioVet wanted them to all receive something.

The winning charity was 'Adoption time in Avsallar' from Turkey.
Their food will be very welcome in a country where pet food is very expensive. The cat food is currently being stored for them by one of their supporters who will take it over in October in a truck with other food VioVet donated to the 'Turkish Animal Group'.

Thank you to all those who voted.

    Tell Me More?

In July we helped dogs so this month we want to help cats.
We want to help seven UK based cat charities (or rescues, rehoming centers etc) to send a selection of stock that is approaching its 'best before' date or has minor damage to the packaging or that our generous suppliers are giving to us to donate.

VioVet would like to thank all the charities/rehomers for taking part and everyone for voting.

We asked our own facebook friends to nominate them.

Each will received something and we hope that the competition will raise their own profiles.

Holly Hedge:
What We do:
The Sanctuary is filled with little faces pleading 'Please choose me' from the very young to the very elderly- some are traumatised at losing their home and owners, others are just unwanted or abandoned and left to fend for themselves. They are all keeping their paws crossed hoping to be chosen as someones special pet and be loved and wanted once more.

Each of our rescues has their own stories to tell if only they can find a listening ear. They all need our help but as least they are safe, well-fed and loved until the right home comes along. Could you find a place in your homes and your hearts and be rewarded with a friend and companion for life?

Freshfields Animal Rescue:

What We do:
Freshfields animal rescue is a non profit making charity caring for abandoned, abused and unwanted animals. We act as a temporary refuge and sanctuary for an endless cycle of animals in need of help.

Our aim is for the misery to stop once they reach us, with each animal receiving the food, medication, socialisation and the love it needs.

Our ultimate objective is to find the right new home & family for each of our charges as quickly as possible!

Every year Freshfields helps rescue and rehome well in excess of 1200 animals and birds across our two sites in Liverpool and Wales.

At any one time we can be home to 250 cats and Kittens, 60 dogs, 120 farm animals including ducks and chickens, 30 horses and ponies and 250 small animals, birds and wildlife. Each animal costs us approximately £408 during its stay before we can re-home it.

Great Yarmouth Pet Rescue:
What We do:
We are a small independent cat rescue which has now been running for 3 years. Since starting up, we have rehomed over 250 stray and abandoned cats and kittens. Our aim is to help find these cats homes, and to educate people about the importance of neutering and microchipping.

All the cats we take in are either strays or have been found purposely abandoned. Some are healthy cats which the owners have taken in to put to sleep. We try our hardest to locate the owners of any stray cats, but without a microchip, this usually proves to be impossible. All cats are vet checked where necessary, neutered and microchipped. They are looked after in a home environment by foster carers, who will assess their temperment and personality, so we can get an idea of what type of home they will need.

NANNA:
What We do:
Since NANNA started we have helped over 7000 animals, sadly the answer to that question is yes.
We have a large team of volunteers who all have two things in common, the welfare of the animals in our care and to make sure they either find new forever homes or they stay with us until they do.

Carla, with the help of the students and all the volunteers, looks after, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, rats, hamsters and practically any animal that happens to come through the doors.

All our kittens are rehomed in pairs only and they are neutered at 6 months at NANNA’s expense.

Coventry Cat Group:
What We do:
We are a group dedicated to helping and caring for the welfare and improving the quality of life of abandoned or feral cats in and around Coventry.
We respond to calls for help from the public and other organisations, e.g. PDSA, when we are told cats, kittens or families of cats (mum and kittens) are apparently abandoned living in gardens or on the highway, or surviving rough as ferals. We catch the strays and take them to a veterinary centre for an assessment of their condition. They are treated as necessary and checked for an identity ‘chip’. If there is no ‘chip’, they are placed with fosterers while we make efforts to identify any owners by enquiries in the vicinity or through another local charity called ‘Pet Search’. If that fails, we adopt the cats into Coventry Cat Group’s care for re-homing.
After neutering, if appropriate, we try to find each cat a loving new home. Kittens that are homed are ALWAYS required to be neutered when old enough. Cats which are not domesticated are relocated where possible at farms or riding stables or returned to their original habitat and arrangements are made for them to be regularly fed.

Pats Rescue:
What We do:
Pats Cats Etc was formed in 1990 in Oxfordshire. After six years of cat rescue with Cats Protection League, I decided I wanted to help all animals and established my own voluntary rescue.

By 1996 the eighth of an acre behind my Cotswold cottage became too small to house the number of animals arriving almost daily. I therefore decided to move to somewhere with better facilities. At that time the best location was in Wales where I was able to buy a twelve-acre smallholding.

The move to Carmarthenshire, with one hundred and fifty animals, took place three days before Christmas and is narrated in my second book, A Cat in Every Corner. Revenue from this aids all the animals and copies are available directly from the sanctuary at £5.99 plus £1.20 pp.

Soon after arrival I discovered that there are a great many animals who are abandoned when their owners die or are too ill to continue caring for them. Since then I have concentrated on offering a permanent home to old, sick or terminally animals and those that nobody else will bother with. I also care for animals whose owners are hospitalised unexpectedly, leaving pets at home. This is done by liaison with Social Services.

Adoption time in Avsallar:
What We do:
Manuela works very closely with her vet who is based 23km away to arrange medical treatments and neutering. She arranges with him to do as many neutering as funds allow (30 this year so far) and he regularly comes over to Avsallar to treat urgent medical cases – we are very grateful indeed for all his support and hard work:

She moved to there in April 2010 and since is constantly caring about innumerable street-cats and dogs. Each day, whether in the winter when its rainy and cold or now, when its very hot, she walks many kilometers with some kilograms of animal food to make sure that all the animals in “Avsallar” get something to eat.

Her own life became very hard and sad due to this but it is impossible for her to look away and ignore the many problems. – Whenever there are sick street animals, she is asking me for help and treatment. There are ill animals all the time. I also castrated over 30 street cats and one street dog of Avsallar since the beginning of 2012 but there are still so many which need to be done which is also not easy for me as located 23 kilometers far away her community.

In Avsallar she already had to make a number of bad experiences with people who give her a hard time for her care but she is a fighter as she hopes to step by step give the animals there a better life.
