Feeding your feline healthy cat food may be one way of ensuring they live to a good old age, but these four-legged friends could be under threat if Gareth Morgan has his way.

As Wales Online reports, the multi-millionnaire environmentalist is calling for the introduction of a cull on cats, warning that a failure to do so could be affection all of the surrounding flora and fauna.

Mr Morgan pointed to the impact of any cats killing birds and other wildlife in the local area and wants all felines to be 'chipped' with any pet without a tag subsequently euthanized to control the population.

Naturally, such outlandish plans have drawn criticism from various animal protection bodies with the UK charity Cats Protection among those to hit out at the plans.

Talking to the news provider, a spokesperson explained: "All cats – whether domestic or feral – are protected under the Animal Welfare Act 2006 which places an obligation on anyone responsible for a cat to ensure they are protected."

Having set up a website to support his beliefs, Mr Morgan has also drawn the ire of cat lovers across the world.

So while his suggestions may be distressing, it's nice to know that when it comes to the protection of cats, there are plenty of people out there willing to lend a hand.
