Side effects in puppies

What are the possible side effects in puppies?

  • VioVet Staff

There are no known side effects listed on this medication's data sheet which means it is a very safe drug. With any medication though there is a very small chance of an allergic reaction. Signs of this can vary greatly and include diarrhoea/vomiting, skin irritations and breathing problems. If you are experiencing any side effects from this medication then I strongly advise you contact your vet for further advice. If you purchased the medication with us then please also contact our customer services so we can investigate this further for you.

Can the tablet make my cat sick?

dntmatter

My cat feels bad and with temperature and her breathing is quite fast and that all happened after i gave the antibiotic. Btw i broke it in to two pieces would that cause he feel unwell?

  • VioVet Staff

These tablets are coated and it is advised that they are swallowed whole, not broken. I am uncertain why this is the case because both of the antibiotic ingredients are safe to use in cats. If she seems unwell in any way it is best to contact your own vet for advice. A check up might be needed.

Stomorgyl 10 uses

Christine

Hi, I've just been given this tablet to treat my puppies diarrhea, but after googling them it says it's used to treat oral infections?? Have I been given the wrong antibiotic?
Thanks

  • VioVet Staff

I think your vet will have intended to use this antibiotic. The license granted for a medicine has to be very specific and is often very limited. However many vets (and doctors) will prescribe antibiotics for purposes other than the licensed use, if in their opinion/experience it is the best one for the job. Metronidazole is one of the ingredients in your tablets and this is used very widely for diarrhoea in dogs, sometimes by itself, sometimes in combination. Obviously you should check with your vet if you are unsure, but I think it will be intended.

Administring tablet

Eleni

Have read that Stomorgyl 10 should not be crushed or broken. The cat will not allow anything near his painful mouth. He will tear me to shreads. How do I administer it? Weight 3kg.
Stressed and concerned.

  • VioVet Staff

This is a difficult situation and there is not going to be a perfect answer. I would say that the unpleasantness for both parties which can result from attempting to forcibly dose a cat like this with a whole tablet is probably not worth it. With a very good technique and a good pill giving device, it might be possible, but it might well not be. Therefore the options are to give Stomorgyl mixed in food, or swap to a different antibiotic. There is a real risk to cats of developing a swallowing problem in future, due to damage to the oesophagus caused by delayed swallowing of the antibiotic doxycycline (found in Stomorgyl). This can even happen with a whole tablet in fact, if it sits in the oesophagus for a while. For this reason it is best advised that a little food is given after the tablet anyway. If Stomorgyl is given broken, then it has to be well mixed with food, then a little un-medicated food or drink given straight after to wash things clear. There has to be a slight risk if this is done, though it is not great. I would suggest you talk to your vet about this and decide if you can get the Stomorgyl down reasonably safely, or switch to a different antibiotic. (Clindamycin can be effective and is available as a capsule which can be opened and the contents more safely mixed with food.)

Stomorgyl 10

veronica

just wondering if there are any e numbers in tablet or coating as my dog is so hyper and only thing I can think is tablets as nothing else in diet changed

  • VioVet Staff

It is possible that your dog is reacting to any of the constituents of the tablet (active or inactive ingredients). If the reason to give the tablets is greater than the problems possibly caused by them, then you might need to complete the course and wait until you stop the tablets to see if your dog calms down. Alternatively do check with your vet as an alternative treatment could be tried.
