Vivitonin for Dogs

Vivitonin for Dogs Vivitonin is a drug used to improve some of the signs of old age. It acts to increase blood flow to the heart, brain and muscle. It is used in dogs which are lacking in energy or seem vacant and unwilling to exercise or show interest in their surroundings. Although you cannot necessarily teach an old dog new tricks, many old dogs do show a distinct improvement in demeanour and activity levels. The effects of Vivitonin (which contains the drug propentofylline) include opening up airways and blood vessels, providing more oxygen to the brain, heart and muscles. Vivitonin is a safe drug which is very rarely associated with any side effects, and you can often help an old dog which seemed just to be "getting old".

Presentation

Vivitonin 50 mg tablets are orange-yellow, film-coated tablets, quarter-scored on one side. Each tablet contains 50 mg of the xanthine derivative Propentofylline.
Vivitonin 100 mg tablets are orange-yellow, oblong film-coated tablets, half-scored on one side. Each tablet contains 100 mg of the xanthine derivative Propentofylline.

Uses

For improvement in dullness, lethargy and overall demeanour in dogs. Vivitonin is particularly useful in older dogs, where it may increase willingness to exercise and exercise tolerance.
Propentofylline has been shown to increase blood flow, particularly of the heart and skeletal muscle. It also increases the blood flow of the brain and therefore its oxygen supply, without increasing the brain's glucose demand.
It has a modest positive chronotropic effect and a marked positive inotropic effect. In addition, it has been shown to have an anti-arrhythmic effect in dogs with myocardial ischemia and a bronchodilator action equivalent to that of aminophylline.
Propentofylline inhibits platelet aggregation and improves the flow properties of erythrocytes. It has a direct effect on the heart and reduces peripheral vascular resistance thereby lowering cardiac load.
Some symptoms or conditions related to impaired blood circulation where Vivitonin may be of benefit are:
Dullness, lethargy and depressed demeanour.
Decreased willingness to exercise and exercise tolerance.
Arryhthmia due to myocardial ischaemia.
Conditions requiring improved circulation in the heart, brain and skeletal muscle.

Dosage and administration

Vivitonin 50 mg tablets
One tablet per 10 kg bodyweight twice a day. The tablets may be halved.
Dogs of less than 5 kg may receive a quarter tablet twice a day.
Divide the tablets in halves and quarters with a knife or with a tablet splitter.
Dogs of 20 kg or more can be given Vivitonin 100 mg tablets.
Vivitonin 100 mg tablets
One tablet per 20 kg bodyweight twice a day.
Vivitonin 100 mg tablets may be halved but should not be quartered.
For larger dogs more accurate dosing may be achieved using a combination of Vivitonin 100 mg and Vivitonin 50 mg tablets. Divide the tablets in halves with a knife or with a tablet splitter.

Vivitreats help to give tablets and are delicious to dogs.

Vivitreats are a soft and tasty treat in the shape of a cylinder which can be pressed and molded around a tablet. They are designed to help  administer tablets to your dog simply, easily and without fuss.

Designed to help alleviate problems that dog owners often have administering tablets long-term, which can lead to vital tablets being missed or treatment being abandoned, Vivitreat is a soft and tasty treat that owners can use to administer any medication. The medication is disguised within the treat by inserting the tablet into its centre and moulding the Vivitreat around it until completely enclosed.
