Rilexine Palatable Tablets for Dogs & Cats

Rilexine Palatable Tablets for Dogs & Cats

Rilexine is an antibiotic containing cephalexin which is particularly used for skin and urinary infections in dogs and cats. Sometimes long courses are required to completely clear infections of this type, so it is important to continue the whole course without a break. Sensitivity testing is recommended to ensure that Rilexine is appropriate for the causative organism. Rilexine tablets are beef flavoured for ease of administration and are happily taken by most dogs and cats.

Tablets for oral administration containing cephalexin (as cephalexin monohydrate PhEur) in three strengths:

Rilexine 75 containing 75mg cephalexin

Rilexine 300 containing 300mg cephalexin

Rilexine 600 containing 600mg cephalexin

Cephalexin monohydrate is a bactericidal antibiotic of the cephalosporin family, obtained by hemi-synthesis of the 7 amino-cephalosporanic nucleus.

Cephalexin acts by inhibiting the nucleopeptide synthesis of the bacterial wall. As a result bacterial destruction occurs. Cephalexin is not inactivated by β-lactamases produced by the Gram positive bacteria and which normally affect penicillins.

After oral administration, Cephalexin is absorbed through the intestinal barrier. The plasma peak is observed very quickly (T max. 1.5). Therapeutic skin levels are obtained within 2 hours.

Cephalexin is eliminated as an active form, mainly by the urinary route (85%).

Cephalexin is effective against a wide range of Gram positive and Gram negative bacteria including: Staphylococci, Streptococcus spp., Pneumococci, E. Coli, Klebslella spp, and Salmonella spp.

Treatment of the following infections caused by bacteria sensitive to cephalexin:

Infections of the urinary tract in cats and dogs (such as nephritis and cystitis).

Cutaneous infections (pyoderma) in dogs, including skin fold pyoderma impetigo, folliculitis, furunculosis and cellulitis.

Dosage and administration

15 mg Cephalexin per kg bodyweight twice daily (equivalent to 30 mg per kg bodyweight per day):

for a duration of 14 days in cases of urinary tract infection;

at least 15 days in cases of superficial pyoderma;

at least 28 days in cases of deep pyoderma.

To achieve this dosage, administer

Cats and dogs

one tablet of Rilexine 75 per 5 kg bodyweight

Dogs only

one tablet of Rilexine 300 per 20 kg bodyweight

one tablet of Rilexine 600 per 40 kg bodyweight

Rilexine tablets are well accepted by cats and dogs but may be crushed or added to food if necessary.

In severe or acute conditions the dose may be safely doubled.

Contra-indications, warnings, etc

Do not use in animals known to be hypersensitive to penicillins.

Do not use in rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters and gerbils.

As with other antibiotics which are excreted mainly by the kidneys, unnecessary accumulation may occur in the body when renal function is impaired. In case of known renal insufficiency the dose should be reduced.

Operator warnings

As with all other penicillins, cephalosporins may cause sensitisation (allergy) following injection, inhalation, ingestion or skin contact. Sensitivity to penicillins may lead to cross sensitivity to cephalosporin and vice versa. Allergic reactions to these substances may occasionally be serious.

1 Do not handle this product if you know you are sensitised, or if you have been advised not to work with such preparations.

2 Handle this product with great care to avoid exposure, taking all recommended precautions. Wash hand after use.

3 If you develop symptoms following exposure such as skin rash you should seek medical advice and show the doctor this warning. Swelling of the face, lips or eyes or difficulty breathing are more serious symptoms and require urgent medical attention.

Pharmaceutical precautions

Keep out of reach of children. Protect from light.

what are the side effects of this drug please. My dog takes 1 and 1/2 tablet twice daily. She is a large german shepherd. She is listless and tired and hungry all the time while taking them. Is this normal please. X

Most dogs do not show side effects from this antibiotic at all. A few dogs will display signs of nausea and occasionally abdominal discomfort. These could account for how your dog's behaving, though increased appetite would not fit particularly. It is usual to give the tablets with a meal to reduce any side effects, so make sure you are doing this.

As in the use of any drug, one has to balance the benefits against any possible side effects. It is very likely that your dog will quickly return to normal when you stop the medication. It is possible of course that your dog's behaviour is nothing to do with the medication and is down to some other underlying problem. If in doubt you should of course talk to your own vet.
