Norodine Antibiotic

Norodine Antibiotic Norodine contains two ingredients which act synergistically to block important metabolic pathways in bacteria. This results in efficacy against a wide range of different bacteria and so Norodine can be used for many types of infection. It is used for infections affecting the respiratory and alimentary systems as well as many other types of soft tissue infection, including infected wounds and septicaemia. The different formulations of Norodine are intended for use in dogs, cats, horses and calves.

Off-white, sugar-coated, unscored, circular antibacterial tablets. Each tablet contains: Trimethoprim Ph.Eur 20 mg Sulphadiazine Ph.Eur 100 mg.

Uses

Norodine 20 Tablets are indicated for oral use in dogs and adult cats. Together the active ingredients produce a double blockade of folinic acid synthesis in bacteria resulting in a level of activity much greater than that obtained from either drug alone. In vitro Norodine is effective against most common Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria including Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Pasteurella spp., Streptococcus spp., Staphylococcus spp., Salmonella spp., Corynebacterium spp., Proteus mirabilis and Citrobacter freundii. When susceptible organisms are present Norodine 20 Tablets may be effective in treating the following conditions: alimentary tract infections; respiratory and urogenital infections; skin and wound infections; eye and ear infections.

Dosage and Administration

This product should be administered orally by hand. The daily dose is 30 mg of combined active ingredients per kg bodyweight. This is achieved using the following doses: Dogs and Adult Cats: One tablet per 4 kg bodyweight daily. Maintain adequate fluid intake during treatment. Treatment should be continued for up to five days or until two days after symptoms have subsided.

Contra Indications

When given to cats the tablets should not be divided or crushed before administration. A low incidence of polyarthropathy and Keratoconjunctivitis Sicca (Dry Eye) has been reported in dogs following oral administration of potentiated sulphonamides. If either of these conditions occur, it is recommended that medication is stopped and that future treatment with similar products is avoided. Wash hands after use.

When susceptible organisms are present Norodine 80 Tablets may be effective in treating the following conditions: alimentary tract infections; respiratory and urogenital infections; skin and wound infections; eye and ear infections.

Dosage and Administration

This product should be administered orally by hand. Dogs: The daily dose is one tablet per 16 kg bodyweight given orally, providing 30 mg of combined active ingredients per kg bodyweight. Treatment should be continued for up to five days or until two days after symptoms have subsided.

Contra Indications

This dosage form is not suitable for use in cats. Norodine 20 Tablets should be administered to this species. Not recommended in cases with hepatic dysfunction. Sulphonamide sensitivity is rare in companion animals but should be considered in cases of unexpected responses to treatment. Wash hands after use.

Product Uses:

Norodine Boluses are primarily indicated for oral use in calves for the treatment of bacterial scours but may also be used for the treatment of acute salmonellosis and bacterial pneumonia. Together the active ingredients produce a double blockade of folinic acid synthesis in bacteria giving a level of activity many times greater than that obtained from either drug alone. In vitro Norodine Bolus is effective against most common Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria including Escherichia coli, Klebsiella spp, Pasteurella spp, Salmonella spp, and Staphylococcus spp.

The boluses are particularly effective against Escherichia coli and Salmonella spp infections.

Dosage Admin:

CALVES: The daily dose is one bolus per 40 kg (90 lb) bodyweight given orally, providing 30 mg of combined active constituents per kg bodyweight daily.

Norodine Antibiotic » Granules » Pack of 10 x 37.5g Sachets

A clear yellow aqueous solution for parenteral administration containing as active ingredients per ml Sulphadiazine BP 200 mg and Trimethoprim BP 40 mg. Preservative: Chlorocresol 1 mg/ml.

Uses

Norodine 24 is indicated in the treatment of acute, subacute and chronic conditions of bacterial origin in horses, cattle, sheep, pigs, dogs and cats. The therapeutic spectrum includes both Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria including Streptococci, Staphylococci, Actinobacilli, Actinomycae, Salmonella, Pasteurella, Pneumococci, Proteus, E. coli, Corynebacteria, Vibrio, Bordetella, Brucella, Klebsiellae and Haemophilae. It is also indicated in species where there may be an existing antibiotic drug resistance. Norodine 24 may be administered in respiratory infections of bacterial origin including rhinitis, pneumonia, bronchitis and in bacterial infections secondary to viral disease such as viral pneumonia or mycoplasma infections. It is also indicated in urogenital tract infections (cystitis, vaginitis, urethritis, nephritis and metritis) and alimentary tract infections (including neonatal diarrhoea and salmonellosis). Other infections include foul-in-the-foot, severe mastitis, bacterial agalactia of sows, and infections of eye, ear and mouth.

Dosage and Administration

For cattle, sheep and pigs the dose is 1 ml per 16 kg bodyweight daily by intramuscular or slow intravenous injection. Norodine 24 may be administered by intravenous injection when rapid blood levels of sulphadiazine and trimethoprim are required. For horses the dose is 1 ml per 16 kg bodyweight by slow intravenous injection. For dogs and cats 1 ml per 8 kg bodyweight, by subcutaneous injection only. The recommended site in dogs is the loose skin at the top of the neck. A single injection may be sufficient in uncomplicated conditions, but in severe infections it may be repeated for up to 5 days, or until 2 days after the symptoms resolve. An appropriately graduated syringe must be used to allow accurate administration of the required dose volume. This is particularly important when injecting small volumes.

Contra Indications

Injections should not be given by routes other than those recommended. Not to be administered intraperitoneally. Norodine 24 is contra-indicated in animals with known sulphonamide sensitivity, severe liver parenchymal damage, or blood dyscrasias. Milk for human consumption must not be taken from a cow during treatment. Milk for human consumption may only be taken after 48 hours from the last treatment. Animals must not be slaughtered for human consumption during treatment. Cattle may be slaughtered for human consumption only after 12 days from the last treatment. Pigs may be slaughtered for human consumption only after 20 days from the last treatment. Adequate drinking water should be available during the therapeutic effect of the product. This product should not be used in horses intended for human consumption. Do not administer to horses exhibiting drug-induced cardiac arrhythmias. Such arrhythmias may be associated with the administration of certain anaesthetic and sedative agents. Anaphylactic shock, potentially fatal, has been observed on rare occasions following administration of potentiated sulphonamide preparations, particularly by the intravenous route. Veterinary surgeons should be mindful of this possibility during the injection process. For intravenous administration the product should be warmed to body temperature and injected slowly over as long a period as is reasonably practical. At the first sign of intolerance the injection should be interrupted and shock treatment initiated. Care must be taken to avoid accidental self-injection.
