Description

Peptizole is the latest product now available to help treat and prevent gastric ulcers in horses. It contains omeprazole which reduces gastric acid secretion in the stomach. A dose is given from the graduated syringe once daily for up to 28 days. One full syringe will provide a full dose for a horse of 700kg bodyweight. If Peptizole is being given as a preventative, rather then treatment of an existing ulcer, then a quarter dose is given each day. Syringes are graduated in 50kg bodyweight divisions.

Peptizole 370 mg/g Oral Paste for Horses

Presentation

Each 7 ml syringe of Peptizole contains 7.57 g of oral paste
Each gram of oral paste contains 370 mg of Omeprazole

Uses

For treatment of gastric ulcers and the prevention of recurrence of gastric ulcers.

Dosage & Administration

For oral administration.
Treatment of gastric ulcers: one administration per day during 28 consecutive days at the dose rate of 4 mg Omeprazole per kg body weight (1 division of the syringe/50 kg BW) followed immediately by a dosage regimen of one administration per day during 28 consecutive days at the dose rate of 1 mg Omeprazole per kg body weight, to reduce the recurrence of gastric ulcers during treatment.
Should recurrence occur, re-treatment at a dose rate of 4 mg Omeprazole per kg body weight (1 division of the syringe/50 kg BW) is recommended.
Prevention of recurrence of gastric ulcers: one administration per day at the
dose rate of 1 mg Omeprazole per kg body weight.
To deliver Omeprazole at the dose of 4 mg Omeprazole /kg, set the syringe plunger to the appropriate dose division for the horse’s weight. Each division on the syringe plunger delivers sufficient Omeprazole to treat 50 kg body weight. The contents of one syringe will treat a 700 kg horse at the rate of 4 mg Omeprazole per kg body weight.
To deliver Omeprazole at the dose of 1 mg Omeprazole /kg, set the syringe plunger to the dose division equivalent to one quarter of the horse’s body weight. For example, to treat a horse weighing 400 kg, set the plunger to 100 kg. At this dose, each division on the syringe plunger will deliver sufficient Omeprazole to treat 200 kg body weight.
It is recommended to associate the treatment with changes of husbandry and training practices.

Not authorised for use in mares producing milk for human consumption

Contraindictions, Warnings etc

My horse has this at a low level on a daily basis to control and suppress his propensity to get gastric ulcers. He has gone from a very stressed unhappy horse to a settled cheeky character. Getting the Peptizole from Viovet has proved much more cost effective than through the vet.

Q & A

Below are some recent questions we've received regarding Peptizole Syringe for Horses, including answers from our team.

Shelf life

Faye McGinley

  • VioVet customer since 2016
  • From: Nottinghamshire, United Kingdom

My horse has just completed a course for 28 days at 500kg of peptizole. She now requires a further 2 weeks at reduced dose. Can I use what’s left in the syringes? Approximately 200kg which should treat her for the further 2 weeks?
Thanks

  • VioVet Staff

The shelf life after first opening the immediate packaging is 28 days. If the syringe you are referring to was opened less than 28 days ago and it has been stored according to the datasheet requirements, then this is fine for use.

If this is outside of yoru vet's dosing recommendations then you should run this use past them first. It may not be appropriate to repeat another course, especially if you need to use this at a lower dose than your vet has advised.

How long should I leave after dosing before I feed

Carol

Can you tell me how long I should leave after administering the syringe before I give my horse any feed

  • VioVet Staff

There are no specific guidelines on this in the product data sheet. However omeprazole does work better when used on an empty stomach, so general advice is to feed at least 30mins before a concentrate/hay net feed.

Formulation

Vanessa

Is Peptizole a buffered formulation, or is it plain omeprazole? My vet says I should use a buffered one.

  • VioVet Staff

Yes, Peptizole is a buffered solution.

Prescription query

Sarah Wade

  • VioVet customer since 2012
  • From: North Yorkshire, United Kingdom

I have asked my vet to provide a prescription for my horse so that I can buy this from you as it is cheaper than from him. Will I need a new prescription every time I buy it?

  • VioVet Staff

We can supply up to the amount (which should be clearly stated) which your vet allows on the written prescription. If your vet chooses to allow an extended course of treatment (which he/she is perfectly at liberty to do) then you can draw off that one prescription as you wish. It is largely down to how long your vet thinks your horse might need the medication for, and how helpful your vet wants to be. Many are very helpful if you just ask for what makes sense for you.
