What is Cancer?

Cancer is not just one disease, it is in reality a name given to a large group of conditions with a common theme. This is sometimes described as "persistent, purposeless proliferation". Essentially cancer occurs when a type of body tissue grows to excess. The excessive tissue often fails to function in an appropriate way, and ultimately gets in the way of the other, normal body tissues, so interfering with their usual function. Cancer often forms as a tumour, which simply means a "lump", but the worst types of cancer often spread as multiple, tiny groups of cells through the body, without ever forming a discrete lump or tumour. Often a tumour forms first, then as the cancer becomes more aggressive, cells leave the original mass and set up in new sites around the body. There are many different types of cancer and many different causes. Many of the causes are not known - the cancer simply seems to appear spontaneously.

What are Apocaps?

Apocaps are designed to try and promote the normal, appropriate death of cells when they have run their normal life span. Some forms of cancer appear to circumvent the normal, programmed cell death process ("apoptosis") and persist and replicate beyond what is useful. Clinical trial work is ongoing in the USA and early results are promising. Complete remission of cancer has been seen in some cases where Apocaps have been used. Realistically this cannot usually be expected. However, Apocaps have often been associated with a much longer lifespan after diagnosis of cancer than would normally be expected. Very importantly the quality of life has often been scored much more highly when compared with dogs not receiving Apocaps. The cellular effects of the ingredients in Apocaps appear to be able to lessen the unwanted side effects which usually result from chemotherapy and radiotherapy. This can mean that the cancer patient feels better while treatment is being given, as well as allowing more of the conventional treatments to be used without causing distress. Apocaps are being used and recommended by canine oncologists in the USA and their use is gradually becoming more widely appreciated and valued in Europe and Asia.

How should Apocaps be used?

Apocaps can be used alone, or in combination with other forms of therapy. Generally speaking it is sensible to try and hit cancer with as many different things as possible. General nutrition can play a big part, so a change in diet is potentially helpful, as well as other lifestyle changes. Apocaps were developed by Dr. Demian Dressler, DVM, working in Hawaii. His book The Dog Cancer Survival Guide, contains lots more useful information on cancer therpay in dogs.

Apocaps are not recommended as a preventative for normal, healthy dogs. Their effects are probably too potent for this to be appropriate.
