Potassium Bromide Solution

Potassium bromide is used to treat epilepsy in dogs. It acts to reduce the chances of further fits, and reduce the severity of any fits which might still occur. Potassium bromide needs to build up slowly within the body to be effective, so there is usually a period of at least a few weeks after starting treatment before full effect is reached. It is possible to start treatment with a larger, loading dose, but this can prove to be irritant to the stomach lining and cause vomiting. Potassium bromide is usually given twice daily, to reduce the chance of vomiting. It is often combined with phenobarbitone to achieve beter control of seizure activity. If side effects are seen, such as lethergy or incoordination, then it is often best to reduce the dose of phenobarbitone. Regular veterinary check-ups are required.
