Zylkene Stress Treatment

Zylkene Stress Treatment

Zylkene is a unique treatment for stress in Dogs, Cats and Horses. It is a safe and natural remedy, based on a protein extracted from milk. It acts on certain receptors in the brain to have a calming effect during periods of stress or environmental challenge. Ideally it is given once daily for a few days beforehand, then also on the same day as the stressful event. It is safe to give for long periods too, but if this is done, it works best if combined with some form of training or de-sensitising regime.

There are many reports in the literature of remarkably good responses to Zylkene. In dogs and cats it is particularly good for travel, re-homing, grooming, visiting the vets etc. For horses, Zylkene Equine can easily be given in feed for clipping, travelling, shoeing etc.

Zylkene can help in many situations where animals might be expected to feel anxious or stressed. However do remember that you have a part to play too. Our animals have a phenomenal ability to pick up on signals we give them. Zylkene works best when combined with thoughtful and considerate handling from calm and sensible people!

Zylkène 75mg is a novel product, which is proven to help manage stress in dogs and cats.

There are many common causes of stress for dogs and cats, as for their owners! Many animals (especially cats) find change difficult to deal with and Zylkène can help facilitate adaptation to change.

Common causes of stress include:

-Moving house
-Arrival of a new baby or a new pet
-A new cat moving into the outside territory
-Sudden noise e.g. fireworks or thunderstorms
-Cattery or Kennel stay
-Many cats also find living with other cats stressful
Dogs and cats obviously cannot tell us how they are coping, but they can alter their behaviour. There are many different ways pets can show stress including:

-Posture changes e.g. crouching, dilated pupils
-Changed demeanour
-House soiling
-Changes use of their environment e.g. changed resting place, reduced exploration or stopped visiting a certain part of the house
-Changes in pattern of sleeping
-Habits such as excessive licking and grooming
-Reduced play
-Changed interaction with humans or other pets – can be increased or decreased
Some signs are more easily recognised than other – cats in particular show stress by ‘withdrawal’ behaviours such as hiding more and resting on a higher surface e.g. top of wardrobe rather than a chair.

Some of these behaviours can also have a medical cause so it is very important to see your vet to discuss if Zylkène is suitable for your pet.

Zylkène comes in capsules which are colour coded for size.

Zylkene only needs to be given once daily, and is easy to give. Simply open the capsule, and mix the palatable powder with food or a treat. Alternatively, you can give the whole zylkene capsule should you wish.

Zylkène has not been associated with any side effects in both cats and dogs.

Behaviour modification techniques can also help your pet to deal with stress – ask you vet or behaviouralist for advice.

Zylkène Equine is a natural product that has been developed to help horses and ponies overcome difficult or stressful situations. Zylkène Equine favours rapid and smooth adaptation to changing situations. Zylkène has been proven to manage stress in dogs and cats and is widely used in small animal practice. Zylkène Equine contains -casozepine, derived from the milk protein casein. -casozepine causes partial agonism of GABA receptors1 which are involved in the regulation of emotional states. Zylkène Equine has not been associated with side effects such as sedation, disinhibition or memory loss at the recommended level of daily intake. Zylkène Equine is manufactured to human pharmaceutical standards (GMP) and is:
• hypoallergenic
• preservative free
• lactose free

Zylkène Equine:
• For first-line stress management
• Easy to give flavoured powder
• Once daily
• Not associated with sedation

Horses, like humans, experience apprehension and stress in certain situations. Some degree of stress is normal, however if stress becomes excessive it can lead to behavioural problems. In the wild, horses live out in the open, grazing throughout the day and are part of a herd with a structured hierarchy. Modern day conditions for horses are usually far removed from this way of life and can be difficult to adapt to.

Causes of stress in horses
Certain situations can be very stressful for some horses including:
• farrier visits
• routine dentistry / teeth rasping
• travelling
• prolonged confinement e.g. box rest
• weaning
• 'breaking' / training
• visiting or riding in a new environment
• new experiences e.g. meeting dogs, a new structure in the yard, exposure to new horses and people

How do horses react to stress?
Most horses will react instinctively in the face of perceived danger to escape or flee from the threat and protect themselves. If they are unable to get away they might respond with aggression. Horses that are stressed over a prolonged period of time can develop behavioural problems such as box walking, weaving or a change in temperament.

What can I do for my horse?
If you think your horse may be showing signs of stress, first contact your veterinary surgeon who will be able to tell you if there is a medical reason for the behaviour.
Your vet will also be able to discuss management options with you which may include training or environmental changes.

How is Zylkène Equine used?
Zylkène Equine is an apple flavoured, easy to give powder.
The contents of the sachet should be mixed with a small  amount of food. The average daily intake required is 2 mg/kg and should be given once daily.

Up to 500 kg         1 sachet a day
(1100 lb)

Over 500 kg          2 sachets a day
(1100 lb)

Zylkène Equine is available in boxes of 20 sachets.
Zylkène Equine can be used for both short and long term stress.

Short term stress
For anticipated stressful situations such as travelling or teeth rasping, Zylkène Equine is mixed into the horse's feed from two days prior to, and for the duration of, the stress.

Long term stress
For chronic ongoing behavioural problems, Zylkène Equine can be used on a continuous basis. The horse's behaviour should be re-evaluated after a 20 day course, ideally with concurrent training and behavioural therapy, and the daily intake modified if necessary. The period of use can be extended after the first course if required.

Zylkène Equine Experiences

"My Shetland pony, Magnus, has been affected by a fear of fi reworks for many years.
During the village fi rework display, he would stand at the back of the stable, shaking, and
would not eat overnight. Last year (2009) I decided to try him on Zylkène. I started on the 2nd November, in preparation for the display on the 7th. During the fireworks, Magnus'
behaviour was much improved. He investigated the noise by approaching the front of his stable and looking up - he was interested but not frightened or shaking as before. He was even taking mouthfuls of hay between fireworks. I was very pleased and will defi nitely be using Zylkène again."

"Alfy, my 26 year old Anglo Arab gelding, is highly strung and struggles to cope with life calmly. To Alfy, stress is being stabled or being turned out alone, vet/farrier/dentist visits, plastic bags, tractor/cow/pig noises, travelling, competing, changing stable etc. etc. Basically any change at all! Alfy reacts to stress by weaving or box-walking very aggressively, throwing himself about, charging around the fi eld, shaking, vocalising and sweating. I try to avoid stressors at all costs but have resorted to using sedative medication at times. Herbal calmers have had no effect.
Within 2 weeks of giving him Zylkène, he was able to remain calm when exposed to low grade stresses and his reaction to major stress was much less extreme e.g. no sweating seen. From the third week onwards, he was hardly reacting negatively to minor stresses and his reaction to major stresses was much less severe. Since starting Zylkène, Alfy is much more able to cope with everyday life and we are both much happier and relaxed."

"My mare is the typical highly-strung, over-reactive Thoroughbred, who is scared of
her own shadow, and therefore not always pleasant to hack out.I tried her on Zylkène
for two weeks and was amazed at the diff erence.
One of the fi rst things that the yard manager commented on was how relaxed and cuddly she had become in the stable, and how much less reactive she was to handle from the ground. As a rider I defi nitely saw a reduction in her spooking on hacks (still there but much less frequently and much less violently).
All in all I felt that Zylkène was a great success, and as a rider/owner I would not hesitate to
use it again for the next stressful time, and as a vet I would not hesitate to recommend it to my clients."

Sound fears are very common in dogs and cats and they don't get better on their own - in fact they often get worse.

Sound desensitisation is proven to be very effective in changing the response of pets to fireworks and other loud noises. By using this program, you will help your pet cope with sudden loud noises.

Benefits of this program:

  • Easy to use - Clear written and verbal instructions to get you started.
  • Practice track - Helping you use the program most effectively
  • Digital recording of real fireworks - More pet are clever enough to tell if a noise is a recorded or real - digital recording help avoid this issue and is highly effective
  • Component sound tracks - Breaking sounds into components avoids overwhelming sensitive pets
  • Prepared in association with independent leading behaviourists - Expert advice to help you and your pet
Remember: Sounds desensitising programmes should not be used during times when the scary sound is likely to occur. For example, you should not use the programme for an animal stressed by fireworks during the firework season.
