Is biospotix spray safe for pregnant dogs? 24th Mar 2014

I have a bitch that is to be mated in 2 days, I noticed a flea on her today, is the spray safe to use?

John Cousins
  • Veterinary Surgeon at VioVet

Biospotix is very safe and I am sure it will not be a problem for the bitch or her pregnancy. There is a slim chance that it will affect the odour she gives to the stud dog, so I might be tempted to not treat her until after the mating. Otherwise I am sure it will be safe.

Biospotix herbal flea treatment 16th Dec 2013

I just had a couple of questions about Biospotix:

A. In your experience does it work?
B. Is it the only natural and insecticide free product that you stock or do you have others?

  • Website Content Developer at VioVet

I am afraid I have no personal experience of using Biospotix flea treatment. It is not produced by one of the major companies which have a reputation to protect, so it is difficult to say how effective it is likely to be. It is perfectly possible that it works very well, but with it not being a conventional pharmaceutical product it has not been through the normal safety and efficacy testing which is required for licensed medications. It is probably perfectly safe and reasonably effective, but it is difficult to say more than that. We have sold a few hundred packs of it online but not had any feedback on how well it has worked.

To my knowledge, Biospotix is a unique product. There is noting quite like it. The only other herbal treatments for fleas etc that I know if are garlic based. It is claimed that the smell of garlic repels fleas, so garlic tablets (some of the ingested oils probably do end up coming out through the skin) and even garlic containing sprays are used a bit. (Denes liquid garlic spray would be a good example.)I guess you would have to be very tolerant of a garlic-smelling pooch to be happy with them!

Is Biospotix absorbed into the body? If not, is it affected by swimming? 14th Jun 2013

I was wanting to try and obtain some more information about the above product.
The information on the web site does not contain the answers to the questions I have.
It states that Biospotix works on the respiratory system of the biting insects, but as is the case with other flea products eg Frontline, is it absorbed into the dogs blood stream or does it work from just lying on the dogs skin and coat.
If that is the case, does that mean if the dogs gets wet, has a bath or goes swimming the product is no longer effective and requires reapplication.

John Cousins

Biospotix works by providing a coating on the surface of the skin and hair. This is then taken up by fleas as they move through the coat. As it happens, Frontline is the same. There is minimal absorption of Frontline and any which is absorbed is ineffective. Some different flea treatments, like Advocate and Stronghold, are indeed absorbed through the skin and work systemically.

Both Frontline and Biospotix are affected slightly by washing and swimming etc. However they are lipid soluble rather than water soluble, so only tiny amounts are removed this way. The effectiveness of the products is only slightly diminished by getting wet, though if this happens repeatedly it will have an effect. Biospotix is not a licensed medication, so it has not been through the same tests for safety, quality and efficacy as products like Frontline. Our belief is that it is in fact very safe and reasonably effective, but that is just a judgement.
