Duphapen Fort 300 mg/ml Suspension for Injection

Presentation

A white/off white suspension for injection.

Each ml contains:

Procaine benzylpenicillin

300mg

Butylhydroxyanisole 0.07mg and butyhydroxytoluene 0.07mg as antioxidants in a long acting oily base.

Uses

Duphapen Fort is specifically formulated to provide sustained antibacterial activity following a single administration.

It is indicated for use in cattle and pigs and for the treatment and control of a wide range of common systemic, respiratory, urinary and local infections caused by or associated with organisms sensitive to penicillin including: Actinomyces pyogenes, Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae, Mannheimia haemolytica, Pasteurella multocida and Streptococcus spp.

The product will therefore be effective in the treatment of infections, caused by susceptible organisms including:

Erysipelas; navel/joint-ill; respiratory tract infections including pneumonia and atrophic rhinitis; meningitis; septicaemia; urogenital tract infections and the control of secondary bacterial invaders in diseases primarily of viral origin.

Dosage and administration

Indicated for intramuscular and subcutaneous administration to non-lactating cattle and for intramuscular administration only to pigs and lactating cattle.

The recommended dose rate is 20mg procaine penicillin per kg bodyweight equivalent to 1ml per 15kg bodyweight.

If signs persist at 72 hours repeat the dose.

Contra-indications, warnings, etc

FOR ANIMAL TREATMENT ONLY

Do not use in known cases of hypersensitivity to penicillins.

Do not inject intranevously.

Do not use on very small herbivores such as guinea pigs, gerbils and hamsters.

This product does not contain an antimicrobial preservative. Use a dry, sterile needle and syringe. Swab the septum before removing each dose.

Occasionally in suckling and fattening pigs administration of penicillin may cause a transient pyrexia, vomiting, shivering, listlessness and incoordination. Additionally, in pregnant sows and gilts a vulval discharge which could be associated with abortion has been reported.

Although the product is well tolerated, occasionally a slight local reaction of a transient nature may be observed.

Can be used during pregnancy and lactation. In pregnant sows and gilts a vulval discharge which could be associated with abortion has been reported.

Withdrawal periods

Milk for human consumption must not be taken during treatment. Milk for human consumption may be taken from cows only after 132 hours from the last intramuscular treatment.

Animals must not be slaughtered for human consumption during treatment. Cattle may be slaughtered for human consumption only after 13 days from the last treatment by subcutaneous administration and 23 days following the last intramuscular injection. Pigs may be slaughtered for human consumption only after 10 days from the last treatment.

Operator Warning

Penicillins and cephalosporins may cause hypersensitivity (allergy) following injection, inhalation, ingestion or skin contact. Hypersensitivity to penicillins may lead to cross reactions to cephalosporins and vice versa. Allergic reactions to these substances may occasionally be serious.

1.Do not handle this product if you know you are sensitised, or if you have been advised not to work with such preparations.

2.Handle this product with great care to avoid exposure, taking all recommended precautions.

3.If you develop symptoms following exposure such as a skin rash, you should seek medical advice and show the doctor this warning. Swelling of the face, lips or eyes or difficulty with breathing, are more serious symptoms and require urgent medical attention.

4.Wash hands after use.

Shake the vial before use.

Do not store above 25°C.

Protect from light.

Keep out of the reach and sight of children.

Following withdrawal of the first dose, use the product within 28 days. Discard unused material.

When the container is broached for the first time, the date on which any product remaining in the container should be calculated. The discard date should be written in the space provided on the label.

Disposal

Dispose of any unused product or empty containers in accordance with guidance from your local waste regulation authority.

Presentation

A white/off-white suspension for injection containing Procaine Penicillin 300 mg/ml. Also contains mixed hydroxybenzoate esters (as sodium salts) 1.5 mg/ml as preservative.

Uses

Duphapen Injection is indicated for use in cattle, sheep and pigs in the treatment of systemic infections caused by or associated with organisms sensitive to penicillin.

In vitro tests have shown the following organisms to be sensitive: Arcanobacterium pyogenes, Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae, Listeria, Mannheimia haemolytica, Pasteurella multocida, Staphylococcus spp. (non-penicillinase producing) and Streptococcus spp.

Duphapen is recommended,therefore to be effective in the treatment of diseases caused by susceptible organisms including: erysipelas; naval/joint-ill; respiratory tract infections including pneumonia and atrophic rhinitis; listeriosis; septicaemia; urogenital tract infections and the control of secondary bacterial invaders in diseases of primary viral origin.

Dosage and administration

Administer by deep intramuscular injection only. Normal aseptic precautions should be observed.

The recommended dose rate is 10 mg/kg bodyweight (1 ml/30 kg) daily for three to five days.

To ensure the correct dosage, bodyweight should be determined as accurately as possible to avoid underdosing.

Contra-indications, warnings, etc

Do not use in known cases of hypersensitivity to penicillins.

Do not inject intravenously or inthrathecally.

Occasionally in suckling and fattening pigs administration of products containing procaine penicillin may cause a transient pyrexia, vomiting, shivering, listlessness and incoordination. Additionally in pregnant sows and gilts a vulval discharge which could be associated with abortion has been reported.

Care should be taken not to overdose. Not to be used in sheep where the milk is intended for human consumption.

Withdrawal periods

Cattle: Meat: 7 days.

Milk: 84 hours.

Sheep: Meat: 7 days.

Milk: Not to be used in sheep producing milk for human consumption.

Pigs: Meat: 7 days.

Duphapen+Strep Suspension for Injection

Presentation

A sterile white to off-white suspension for injection.

Each ml contains:

Procaine Benzylpenicillin (procaine penicillin)

200 mg

Dihydrostreptomycin-Sulphate

250 mg

The product also contains 1.5 mg/ml nipasept sodium as antimicrobial preservative and 1.25 mg/ml sodium formaldehyde sulphoxylate dihydrate as antioxidant.

Uses

Duphapen + Strep is indicated for use in cattle, horses, sheep and pigs for the treatment of systemic infections caused by, or associated with, organisms sensitive to penicillin and/or streptomycin including:

Corynebacterium pyogenes, Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Listeria spp, Mannheimia haemolytica, Pasteurella multocida, Staphylococcus spp (non penicillinase producing), Streptococcus spp, and Salmonella spp.

Duphapen + Strep will therefore be effective in the treatment of infections caused by susceptible organisms including: Erysipelas, navel/joint-ill, respiratory tract infections, including pneumonia and atrophic rhinitis, listeriosis, meningitis, septicaemia, toxaemia associated with mastitis, urogenital tract infections, enteritis associated with Salmonella spp, salmonellosis and the control of secondary bacterial invaders in diseases of primary viral origin.

The combination of penicillin and dihydrostreptomycin is especially useful in the treatment of mixed infections involving both Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms.

Dosage and administration

Shake the vial before use.

Administered by deep intramuscular injection.

Normal aseptic precautions should be observed.

Recommended dosage rate is 8 mg/kg bodyweight procaine penicillin with 10 mg/kg bodyweight dihydrostreptomycin sulphate equivalent to 1 ml per 25 kg bodyweight. Treatment should be given once daily for up to three consecutive days. The maximum dose volume administered at one site should not exceed 15 ml for horses, 6 ml for cattle, 3 ml for sheep and 1.5 ml for pigs.

Contra-indications, warnings, etc

Do not use in known cases of hypersensitivity to penicillin.

Not for intravenous or intrathecal administration.

Occasionally in suckling and fattening pigs, administration may cause a transient pyrexia, vomiting, shivering, listlessness and incoordination. A mild transient local reaction may occur at the site of injection in horses. Duphapen + strep can be safely administered to pregnant and lactating animals. However, in pregnant sows and gilts a vulval discharge which could be associated with abortion has been reported.

Aminoglycosides have a narrower margin of safety than beta-lactam antibiotics.

Do not administer with other antibiotics such as tetracyclines or with other aminoglycosides.

Use with care in animals known to have kidney disease or defective renal function.

Do not exceed the recommended dosage or duration of treatment.

Withdrawal periods

Cows: Milk: 60 hours.

Meat: 23 days.

Sheep: Milk: Not to be used in sheep producing milk for human consumption.

Meat: 31 days.

Pigs: Meat: 18 days.

Horses: Not to be used in horses intended for human consumption.

Treated horses may never be slaughtered for human consumption.

The horse must have been declared as not intended for human consumption under national horse passport legislation.
