Description

A calming and soothing blend of the powerful plant extract Valerian, Dorwest Valerian Compound is designed to encourage calmness in nervous dogs and cats. The full strength extracts in Dorwest Valerian Compound provide a concentration that is economical and easy to administer. A fast acting and easily absorbed compound, Dorwest Valerian Compound is perfect for stressful situations such as fireworks, thunderstorms etc. Liquid form can be orally administered or added onto food. The compound acts quickly to calm and control hyperactive or anxious dogs and cats.

Cats find the smell of Organic Valerian Compound particularly attractive and if a few drops are placed on the bedding, a reduction in anxiety shows quickly and even unmanageable cats become calmer and easier to handle.

Use in combination with Dorwest Scullcap and Valerian for the perfect combination to tackle anxiety during the fireworks season.

Heard fireworks go off tonight. Beau had a rabbit in headlights look. Administered it straight into her mouth. Within 10 minutes it looked like she was sunning herself in the Caribbean.A+++++++++++

His miaows got less + less until when we reached the cattery he was practically asleep. On the 2nd occasion, it seemed to have much less effect but this may have been because I hadn't put enough drops on his cat basket blanket. Blackie is such an anxious cat he probably needs knocking out!

Use during fireworks to ensure my dog can relax. Dose seem to work fairly well even on very stressed dog. Even if it's just to sit down.

We normally use adaptil tablets but they take 2 hours to work! We thought we would try this... very glad we did! Works very quickly. Our lurcher hates fireworks and thunder so this has been fantastic!

Q & A

Below are some recent questions we've received regarding Dorwest Organic Valerian Compound, including answers from our team.

Can this be given alongside the tablet form?

Karen

I have a 6 month staffie pup that is fearful of most noises despite being socialised & around our other dogs. I was thinking of starting her on the tablet form to see if that would help her.
She suffers acute anxiety for travelling despite positive training so wondered if the liquid form could be given when we have to make trips in the car or do I have to leave the tablets off that day so she is not overdosing?

  • VioVet Staff

You should not use both the Valerian tablet and liquid together as this will be an overdose of the ingredient. This is unlikely to cause any major issues but is best avoided. If needing an extra 'boost' of calming then I advise using a spray calmer alongside this. Adaptil would be a good choice as this is not Valerian based.

Hi there. Is this suitable for long term use? It talks about fireworks which is a more short term issue. I have a cta who had a very horrible neurological reaction to stronghold spot on and since has been very jumpy and nervous, (was super chilled before this...very sad). She has been ok on Zylkene but its maximum usage is 3 months and I would like to try something natural? Would this be suitable for longer term use for her and also, is it likely after a time to effect more permanent changes in neurology, behaviour etc?
Many thanks,
Karen

This is a very widely used herbal supplement, but has not been developed into a licensed medicine as such. Therefore there is a large wealth of anecdotal information about its effects and also its safety, but scientific research yielding precise answers to the sorts of questions you ask have not been carried out. Therefore based on the evidence I am aware of, I would say that this product is safe to give long-term and some people do do this. I would expect the effect to be mild even in the short term, though it is regarded as perfectly adequate by many people who give it to their animals. Long-term I would expect the effects to be reduced, but with a history as in your cat, one would expect she might gradually become more like her old self eventually with help anyway.

Firework fear

Michelle

I am looking at trying the skullcap/ valerian tablets to my dog who has a fear of fireworks. Can the compound be given as well as the tablets and if so is it at the same time

  • VioVet Staff

It is usual to give either one or the other product. If this does not have an adequate effect, you could try both, though I would not give them at exactly the same time.

Is it alright to be used by a heart patient

T

My dog has an enlarged heart - would it be alright if he has this?

  • VioVet Staff

This product should not have a bad effect on your dog, though an enlarged heart can need other treatments which you should of course explore with your vet. The Valerian will probably be neutral to the heart, though if it calms your dog down generally, it might be beneficial indirectly.

How long before effect to work ?

sue

If needed to take to the groomers how long from giving for effect to take ?

  • VioVet Staff

Dorwest Organic Valerian Compound is very fast acting and ideally should be given 20-30 minutes before the desired effect is required. This should aid relaxation for approximately 2-3 hours and up to two doses can be given in one day. Additionally, when using Dorwest Organic Valerian Compound for cats it can also be used on the bedding and the aroma will help to calm and relax them (please note that the liquid is dark brown and so there is a possibility it may stain, so please be careful what you put it on).

Any side effects after use

side effects

Does the dog suffer any side effects after use, sleeping long periods, loss of appetite, vomiting?

  • VioVet Staff

There are no side-effects I am aware of which are regularly reported with this product. I am sure the occasional dog will have vomited or temporarily gone off its food, but that is what dogs do anyway sometimes. I think this is a very safe product and no side-effects should be expected.

Doseage

linda

what would the dose be for a 30kilo dog and how long does it take for it to have an effect. Also how long does the effect last for before another dose is required.

  • VioVet Staff

Suggested dose rate is one 5ml teaspoon for a large dog (over about 25kg bodyweight), given as required but not more than twice daily.

(Cats and small dogs, quarter of a teaspoon, medium dogs half a teaspoon at a time.)
