Advocate is a spot-on treatment used to control internal and external parasites affecting dogs, cats and ferrets. The contents of one pipette are applied to the skin on the back of the neck between the parted hair. The area is then left to dry, which might take a few hours. One of the active ingredients, moxidectin, is absorbed through the skin and travels around the body, treating internal parasites such as worms. The other active ingredient, imidacloprid, transfers across the surface of the body, dissolved in the oils on the surface of the skin and hairs. Surface living parasites such as fleas are killed on contact.
Of all the products available, Advocate probably kills the broadest range of parasites affecting dogs, cats and ferrets

Below are some recent questions we've received regarding Advocate Spot-on Solution for Dogs & Cats, including answers from our team.

Will this work for ear mites? If so which one is the best please
Yes, Advocate does treat ear mites. The datasheet states the following regarding this use:
A single dose of the product should be administered. In dogs, loose debris should be gently removed from the external ear canal at each treatment. For both cats and dogs, a further veterinary examination 30 days after treatment is recommended as some animals may require a second treatment. Do not apply directly to the ear canal.

What does the 40 or 80 spot on mean? I have a 6kg cat which one is best?
Spot on refers to the application method, they are pipettes with liquid that are 'spotted onto' the skin on the back of the neck.
The 40 and 80 refers to the amount of liquid within each pipette. Each pipette of the small cat and ferret presentation contains 0.4 ml (40 mg imidacloprid, 4 mg moxidectin), the large cat presentation contains 0.8 ml (80 mg imidacloprid, 8 mg moxidectin).
According to the datasheet your 6kg cat will need one large pipette per dose. This is a prescription only medication so you should contact your vet regarding dose advice, they will need to write a written prescription for you to purchase the product.

Is Advocate suitable for kittens at 8 weeks of age?
If not what is a suitable flea and worm treatment?
How often should the treatment be given to kittens?
Many thanks
The datasheet for this product states 'Do not use in kittens under 9 weeks of age'. Use in an 8 week kitten is therefore not advised.
You can use Advantage at this age, which is over the counter. I recommend checking this out instead. It will not cover worms/mites though. You can use an over the counter wormer such as TermaWorm alongside Advantage to cover roundworms and tapeworms.

How long does a treatment last?
It is advised to repeat treatment with Advocate monthly.

I read that it kills fleas on cats, but does it also kill flea eggs on cats..
There are flea treatment products for medicating animals that will kill flea eggs. Fortunately this is not necessary for clearing a flea infestation though, I recommend reading our blog 'Help - my pet's got fleas!' for more information on tackling the issue.

Currently on Advocate but advised to consider Bravecto to cover ticks which product benefits outweigh each?
Advocate covers fleas, mites, lice and roundworm including lungworm. It does not cover ticks.
Bravecto covers fleas, mites, lice and ticks but it does not cover roundworm (or lungworm).
It is advised to discuss which is most suitable for your pet with your local vet as it varies depending on location within the country. Ticks and lungworm are both worth covering if you can, but depending on your area one may be more important to cover than the other.

Hello is there an alternative to advocate for cats that I can buy without a prescription that has similar ingredients over the counter that will treat the same thing advocate will do?
Advantage is the over the counter version of this product. It contains the same flea killing ingredients however it does not cover roundworms or mites as it does not contain moxidectin.
You can then use a wormer alongside this such as Dronspot.
Unfortunately there are no over the counter products that will cover fleas/mites and roundworms all in one formulation, like Advocate.

Do you use Advocate every 3 months for just the puppies or do you use it less when they've reached 12 months? If you get a prescription does it last or do you need to keep getting a prescription and also do you get charged for the prescription? Is it safe to use the Advocate with the Droncit and do you need a prescription for that as well. Sorry for all the questions. I have 6 puppies so just trying to work out the cost effective way of doing it. Thanks.
Do you use Advocate every 3 months for just the puppies or do you use it less when they've reached 12 months?
Advocate should be used monthly according to the datasheet. If you wish to prevent against fleas, mites, lice and roundworms (including lungworm) in your pups then it must be kept up monthly for the entire dog's life.
If you get a prescription does it last or do you need to keep getting a prescription and also do you get charged for the prescription?
A written prescription is valid for up to 6 months from the date of issue, unless your vet states a shorter expiry. It is only valid for the number of pipettes that your vet has prescribed. They will write as much as they feel is safe to prescribe before you have to see them again for another script.
Is it safe to use the Advocate with the Droncit and do you need a prescription for that as well?
Yes you can use Advocate with Droncit. This works well as Droncit covers tapeworm, that Advocate doesn't. Droncit is over the counter and can be purchased from us without prescription.

Hi could you please tell me how much would I need for a year supply
My dogs weight 36kg
The datasheet for this product advises monthly dosing, therefore you will need 12 x Advocate for Extra Large Dogs 25-40kg pipettes for your 36kg dog. This is a prescription only medication so you will need to get a script from your vet to purchase it with us.

Advocate select a product when I open it for dogs
It says 40 small dogs
100 medium dogs etc ??????
You should pick whichever size your vet has written on your prescription as this will be the appropriate option for your pet.
